Music... in education

Just watched a segment on the Today show about a music program in Memphis run at the site of the old "Stax" recording studios' . http://www.staxmusicacademy.org/history.html  .  You can tell.... these kids, if in regular school would probably be troublemakers (they've got talent) and/or be dropping out.  BUT....  the music is the carrot.  They have to keep up their academic scores to participate in the musical program.  Yes, this is art (and more embraced by the "academic" crowd),  but it is still vocational education.  Sadly, the nature of the music industry is that maybe 1 in a 1000 will make it big, 1 in 100 will be able to make a living at it (they'd be much better of studying plumbing) but.....   This is their passion.  They'll get the same education as the regular high-school students, but with something they love... they'll hang in there and stick with it.
My passion is vocational education, specifically the trades.  I think vocational charter schools (and a Technical College system) is the only answer to getting more education to more students.  Broadening my "scope" a bit......   I think a separate "arts" option should be out there also.   One size does NOT fit all.
