Letter to the Editor RGJ 9/13

Get TMCC program back on track

RGJ Letter to the Editor: September 14, 2006

It appears TMCC is going to try and offer three industrial maintenance (electrical) classes this fall (actually two classes, the introductory electrical class is offered twice). And this takes two instructors!
When I was teaching the IMT program, I taught (usually) 12 classes per year (six lecture and six online). Three different classes per semester. And, yes, I taught them all (plus teaching IMT classes for MAP and business and industry).
I cannot see any progress TMCC has made, even with industry throwing money at it like there was no tomorrow ($190,000 FIPSE grant, $500,000 grant from IGT).

TMCC administration is short-changing the industrial community.

It's an election year. Make some noise out there. Write, call, e-mail, the college president, board of regents, Nevada elected, and soon-to-be-elected, representatives, letters to the editor.
We must get this program back on track. Forty percent of currently employed electrical workers will be retiring in the next 10 years. Who is going to fill their positions?
Also... might as well ask them to explain how they managed to run off the electrical apprenticeship program, costing not only the community, but another $500,000 in FTE money.
